This blockbusting sci-fi adventure brings the superheroes from the popular Marvel Comics series to life, amid spectacular action sequences and breathtaking special effects. Directed by Bryan Singer, the all-star cast includes Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Anna Paquin, Halle Berry and James Marsden.
The X-Men are a disparate group of people whose mutated genetic codes have given them a wide range of superhuman powers. Actively feared and despised by many sections of society, they are gathered together by a sympathetic mentor, Professor Charles Xavier (Stewart), whose aim is to harness their powers for the good of mankind and so win the trust of the general population.
As they fight for acceptance, the X-Men must also do battle with a terrorist organisation comprising other mutants under the control of metal manipulating Magneto (McKellen), who sees mutants as the next phase in evolution, and is determined to give nature a helping hand.
At the centre of this epic struggle are two mysterious mutants in search of their true identities - the adamantium-clawed, self-regenerating loner Wolverine (Jackman, pictured) and Rogue (Paquin), who can absorb other people's strength - and other mutants' powers. Assisted by Cyclops (Marsden) and Storm (Berry), they fend off an attack from Magneto's hit squad comprising Sabretooth (Tyler Mane) and Mystique (Rebecca Romijn).
But after being taken under Xavier's wing at his School for Gifted Youngsters, they soon realise that the real battle with Magneto is just beginning...
