Radio 3 in Concert: Radio France Philharmonic Performs Rimsky-Korsakov and Ravel

Fiona Talkington presents a perfromance by Radio France Philharmonic, playing Caplet's Conte fantastique, Ravel's Shéhérazade amd Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade Suite. Egyptian soprano Fatma Said brings a special affinity to Ravel's settings of three poems inspired by the Tales of the Arabian Nights, while after the interval the orchestra plays a work that Ravel admired hugely, Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade Suite, four movements unified by the haunting sound of the violin solos played by the leader of the orchestra that depict Scheherazade herself as she tells her wondrous tales to the stern Sultan. The concert opens with Conte fantastique, a dark chamber work by André Caplet inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Masque of the Red Death. Caplet: Conte fantastique.
