Life is looking good for teenager Charlie St Cloud: in spite of his relatively humble origins, his competitive yachting career is progressing nicely and he has just gained acceptance to an Ivy League university. But all this good stuff is destroyed in an instant when his brother Sam is killed in a car crash.
Charlie turns his back on the world and takes a job in the cemetery where Sam is buried. It's here that the supernatural element kicks in, as Charlie can see and interact with the spirits of the dead, which means he can continue to spend time with his beloved sibling. But Charlie's world isn't entirely ethereal and, when he falls for his former classmate - and sailing equal - Tess Carroll, he finds himself forced to choose between his love for her and that for Sam, between the living and the dead.
