Young novelist Calvin Weir-Fields (Paul Dano) is suffering from 'difficult second book syndrome'. Desperately in need of inspiration, he resorts to writing about a recent dream he had featuring a young woman named Ruby Sparks (Zoe Kazan).
After admitting to his therapist (Elliott Gould) that he is, in fact, falling in love with his own fictional creation, Calvin is flabbergasted to find Ruby has jumped off the page and into his flat to become an actual human being. But can his literal dream girl live up to her billing?
Star Kazan makes her screenwriting debut with this quirky comedy drama that has earned her plenty of critical praise. With real-life boyfriend Dano playing her on-screen other-half, the supporting cast is rounded out with more top talent including Antonio Banderas and Steve Coogan.
A twist on 80s cult classic Weird Science, Kazan's screenplay, directed by the BAFTA-nominated pair behind Little Miss Sunshine, is not only funny but smartly looks as the reality of having - and being - a dream come true.
