Judge Dredd first appeared in 1977 in the British comic book 2000 AD. This first, and only, screen incarnation stars Sylvester Stallone as THE LAW in the dystopian Megacity. Dredd and his colleague Judge Hershey (Diane Lane) dispense instant justice on the streets until he's found guilty of murdering a TV newsman. He's sent to Aspen Prison Colony, but his authority is badly missed when ex-Judge Rico (Armand Assante) begins wreaking havoc in Megacity for another megalomaniac Judge's own ends. Of course Dredd is innocent, framed by Rico, and tries to get free to rid Megacity of more scum.
Danny Cannon's film sticks closely to the comic book ethos, with a knowing camp humour and the violence is suggested rather than explicit. Rob Schneider stars as comic relief Fergie, one of Dredd's informants, while Jürgen Prochnow and Max von Sydow bring gravitas as senior Judges Griffin and Fargo.
