Gabe Roth (Woody Allen) and his wife, Judy (Mia Farrow) are a seemingly happy couple who share their lifes ups and downs with their best friends, Jack (Sydney Pollack) and Sally (Judy Davis).
All seems to be going well when Jack and Sally nnounce that they are splitting up which comes as a shock to Gabe and Judy. This may be down to the knowledge that their own marriage is also drifting apart and now they have been forced to face up to this realisation.
Now, while Jack and Sally try to get on with their new seperate lives and start meeting new people, Gabe and Judy's marriage is being put under more and more strain and the pair start becoming attracted to other people around them.
