Manhattan couple Sam (Patrick Swayze) and Molly (Demi Moore) are walking home from an evening out when a masked attacker confronts them, shooting Sam and leaving him to die in his girlfriend's arms. A devastated Molly struggles to cope with her loss, unaware that Sam's ghostly presence remains with her, trapped between Earth and the afterlife. Now invisible, Sam is able to discover that he was specifically targeted in the attack and that Molly is still in grave danger. He encounters medium, Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg), and persuades her to help him communicate with Molly, but despite her knowledge of the couple's most intimate secrets, a disbelieving Molly won't take the eccentric psychic for anything more than a con artist. As danger closes in, Sam slowly learns to interact with the world around him, but can he warn Molly about the enemy in her midst before it's too late?
Following Patrick Swayze's recent death, this moving film takes on an extra poignancy. After the star's appearance in Dirty Dancing, Ghost cemented his status as one of Hollywood's most desirable leading men, with Moore's performance leading to high-profile roles in A Few Good Men and Indecent Proposal. One of the film's highlights is Oscar winner Goldberg, whose sparkling, show-stealing turn brings Bruce Joel Rubin's Academy Award-winning script to life.
Jerry Zucker's film is a renowned weepy, but effortless humour coupled with a gripping plot make for a hugely entertaining journey to that tearjerker of an ending.
See Swayze give one of his greatest performances in this much-loved romance classic.
