Barbarella (1968)

Directed by
Roger Vadim

This piece of interplanetary titillation is based on Jean-Claud Forest's risqué French comic strip which achieved international notoriety in the early sixties.

The tone of the film is set by its opening sequence, a free fall striptease by Jane Fonda in the title role, in which director Roger Vadim clearly demonstrates that his aim was to make his (then) wife an international sex star in the mould of his previous wives (Brigette Bardot and Annette Stroyberg).

The story is basically "Flash Gordon" in drag with Barbarella (Jane Fonda) saving the 40th century from destruction at the hands of the demented Durand-Durand (Milo O'Shera) (yes indeed the inspiration for 80s popular music combo Duran Duran), and his positronic ray.

Barbarella is helped by erratic and erotic support from Dildano (David Hemmings) and the statuesque blind angel Pygar (John Phillip Law).

A confectionery delight with a humorous edge the eponymous heroine never finds herself in a situation where it isn't possible for her to lose at least part of her already minimal clothing.
