Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi's first feature for the Japanese animation powerhouse Studio Ghibli is a charming adaptation of Mary Norton's classic children's tales about The Borrowers. An ordinary house in an unremarkable Tokyo suburb harbours an extraordinary secret: a family of tiny people live beneath its floorboards. The Clocks have a comfortable life scavenging items from the 'human beans' above them, who are oblivious to their existence. They turn their finds into clothes, furniture and the rest of life's necessities. Their main worries are the lack of other tiny people and the cat next door - which poses a constant danger on foraging trips. However, their lives change dramatically when a boy called Sh¶ comes to stay while recuperating from a grave illness. He soon spots the Clocks' teenage daughter Arrietty; and while they go on to form a close friendship, the homeowners react very differently to the discovery of who's sharing their house.
