Susan decides to go ahead with the adoption of baby Susie herself. Peter tries to persuade an abused wife to take action against her policeman husband. Carol deals with cases of patients trying to scam medication. Meanwhile, Doug's AIDS patient, Chia Chia, returns and is found to be suffering from meningitis but for the sake of buying him a few more weeks of life he would almost, undoubtedly suffer endless pain. His mother decides not to put him through the treatment that could get rid of the illness for the sake of a few extra weeks.
