John Yorke presents the first of two episodes in which he examines Alexander Dumas's early page-turner Georges. Dumas was a mixed-race man and this is his only novel that directly addresses race - a swashbuckler set in one of France's colonies, Iles de France, where slavery is still flourishing and where racial hierarchies are strictly observed
