Joanna Lumley's Greek Odyssey: Mount Olympus and Beyond

Series 1, episode 4

In the final part of the series Joanna is in the mountains of northern Greece which reverberate with ancient stories and legends. She begins with a climb up Mount Olympus, the country's highest peak and the traditional dwelling place of the gods, whence they meted out punishments and blessings upon the mortals thousands of feet below. Joanna meets some of today's gods, athletes who are taking part in the brutal challenge of the Mount Olympus marathon. Travelling east off the beaten track, she comes across a women's fortune-telling festival, whose origins date back to Homer. Poems describing someone's future are read out to large crowds - but they can often prove rather shocking and vulgar. Joanna explores a magnificent church that was built in just forty days and discovers the otherworldly landscape of Meteora, where Orthodox monks still inhabit these monasteries in the sky.
