Ade at Sea: Bridlington

Series 1, episode 6

Series in which Adrian Edmondson explores Britain's maritime past and its influence today. The third episode finds Ade sailing the coast around Bridlington, once a major port for North Sea fishing. He joins lobster and crab fisherman Peter Sanderson, whose family have worked here since the 1600s. Back on land, Ade tracks down a 100-year-old Yorkshire Coble - or flat-bottomed boat. On the cliffs at Flamborough Head, he finds out about the history of climming, and how local men descended on ropes in search of the eggs of seabirds nesting there. He meets Roy Artley, whose father was one of the last people to work the cliffs, and sees some rare archive film of him in action in the 1960s. The crews of the Bridlington lifeboat have been saving lives from the treacherous North Sea since 1805, and the local men of the RNLI still volunteer. Ade joins them on a training drill but ends up in the water and has to be rescued by an RAF helicopter.
