The Sky at Night: Fatal Attraction

Black holes are the beating heart of galaxies. It seems that they are pivotal in their evolution, but they also have a destructive side. A dust cloud bigger than the Earth is on a doomed course as it careers towards the black hole at the centre of our galaxy. Chris Lintott visits the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge to talk to the astronomer royal Martin Rees about this cataclysmic encounter and Lucie Green meets one of the Institute's longest-serving observers, who has been using its telescopes for 56 years. The rest of the team go on a star camp in the Peak District.
