Is It a Boy or a Girl?

This programme looks at the confusion surrounding inter-sexual births, in which babies are born with ambiguous genitalia.

There are as many as 65,000 such births worldwide every year and since the '50s surgery has been used to determine which sex the intersexual baby should take.

Many of the children who underwent this surgery are now adult and some are claiming that they have been assigned the wrong sex; life for such people has been filled with conflicting emotions and painful operations, while others still do not know what their true gender really is.

Many are arguing that surgery should be a choice for the individual, made when they are old enough to decide what their true gender is.

This programme explores the complicated issues of science, ethics and sexuality behind this phenomenon and illustrates just how narrow the divide between male and female can be.
