John Florance joins choristers and musicians in Surrey and the East Midlands as they explore two centuries of rural church worship. They sing and play Psalmody, later described by Thomas Hardy as West Gallery Music. Distinct from cathedral music, it was usually composed by amateurs and performed by a wide variety of instrumentalists and singers, invariably in a hearty and wholesome fashion.
