The Silk Road

Three-part series in which historian and writer Dr Sam Willis traces the story of the most famous trade route in history. Covering a distance of 5,000 miles, Sam reveals how the Silk Road was the world's first transcontinental superhighway along which people with new ideas, new cultures and new religions made exchanges that shaped the development of humanity. In the first episode, Sam starts in Venice and explores how its Renaissance architecture and art has been shaped by the east. From Venice, Sam travels to the beginning of the Silk Road - China's ancient capital Xian, where he reveals how a single deal (silk for war horses) spawned a global network of trading paths carved out across thousands of miles by merchants, pilgrims and soldiers. episode 1.
