Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire: Revolution

Series 1, episode 3

Rome was once a largely democratic society, with regular elections. This Republic lasted for 500 years, and was finally brought down because of a young man called Tiberius Gracchus, a brave soldier, a man of honour and the most unlikely revolutionary. Driven by his mother Cornelia's dreams of family glory and by the example of his late father, Gracchus believes in the ideals of the Republic: fairness, decency and justice for everyone. He even takes part in the Republic's greatest victory, leading the troops over the walls of Carthage to help defeat Rome's arch-rival once and for all. Rome is now the only superpower in the Ancient World and, with no enemy to keep them in check, Rome's aristocrats become greedy, driving ordinary people off their land and seizing it for themselves. As a believer in Republican justice, Gracchus takes up the cause of the poor.
