Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire: Caesar

Series 1, episode 2

Julius Caesar is probably the most famous Roman of them all - a maverick, a soldier of genius, charming, savage, power-crazed, opportunistic and brilliant. What he achieved - overthrowing a 500-year-old Republic and seizing power for himself - is perhaps the single greatest turning point in the history of Rome. This episode begins with Caesar facing disaster. His army is surrounded, outnumbered by a vast army of Gauls. While all about him are in despair, Caesar devises a strategy that leads to his most brilliant victory. On the back of that victory he takes the momentous decision to march on Rome and seize power. This puts him in direct conflict with his old friend and ally, Pompey. At first, to Caesar's horror, Pompey gains the upper hand. Caesar faces mutiny and is again cut off. Defeat seems inevitable. But, once more, he has a brilliant plan... Part 2 of 6.
