This episode begins with Caesar facing disaster. His army is surrounded, outnumbered by a vast army of Gauls. While all about him are in despair, Caesar devises a strategy that leads to his most brilliant victory. On the back of that victory he takes the momentous decision to march on Rome and seize power. This puts him in direct conflict with his old friend and ally, Pompey. At first, to Caesar's horror, Pompey gains the upper hand. Caesar faces mutiny and is again cut off. Defeat seems inevitable.
