Witness (1985)

Directed by
Peter Weir

Peter Weir's superb 1985 romantic thriller was an Oscar winner and a hit at the box-office. Starring Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis, it works on a number of levels - as a thriller, as a love story and as an examination of cultural differences.

An eight-year-old Amish boy, Samuel Lap (Lukas Haas) is the sole witness to a murder that happened while travelling through Philadelphia with his mother, Rachel (McGillis).

Scared for his safety, the police decide to put him under a witness protection programme. When the killers start to come after Rachel and Samuel, good cop John Book (Ford) has to go into hiding with them to prevent anything bad from happening to them.

All three then steal away to Amish country, leaving Book having to adjust to his new back-to-basics lifestyle. Soon Book can no longer resist his feelings for Rachel and it looks like romance is in the air, but the killers are still on their trail...

Highly recommended.
