When two women are brutally murdered, a newspaper tycoon offers the job of editor-in-chief to whichever of three senior newsmen can crack the case. One subcontracts the job to the paper's top crime reporter, and persuades him to use his girlfriend as bait. Among director Fritz Lang's best films, it follows the ruthless newsmen's perverse journey into the unknown darkness of the underworld.
