Rival children's gangs from Ballydowse and Carrickdowse fight pitch battles with sticks and stones. The winners gain regional bragging rights; the losers get their buttons snipped off and run home flapping in the breeze. Over the course of a dozen skirmishes, the two leaders establish a grudging friendship.
