John Wayne won his only Oscar for his portrayal of the one-eyed whisky-loving Marshall Reuben J 'Rooster' Cogburn in Henry Hathaway's classic muscular western. He is hired by Mattie Ross, whose father was gunned down by Tom Chaney, who has since joined up with the notorious Ned Pepper gang. Their quest is complicated by Texas Ranger 'La Boeuf', who is also after Chaney but eventually the trio strike an uneasy alliance and set out into Indian territory after their prey.
