Trapeze (1956)

Directed by
Carol Reed

Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis and Gina Lollobrigida star in Carol Reed's circus-set drama, based on Max Catto's novel The Killing Frost. Mark Ribble is a washed-up trapeze artist who agrees, after much badgering, to teach brash young flyer Tino Orsini how to perform a triple somersault, the most dangerous and revered move in the discipline. All goes well, until beautiful and ambitious tumbler Lola gets in on the act. A love triangle soon develops and tensions rise between the two men, as Orsini in particular becomes increasingly distracted from the task in hand. Distraction, particularly when attempting 'the triple', could prove fatal and it's probably best for the man catching you not to be a love rival, but these simple elements ensure the drama is kept high. Shot at the Cirque d'Hiver in Paris and featuring breath-taking aerial stunts.
