Lavish historical melodrama about Queen Elizabeth I's love for Sir Walter Raleigh. Unfortunately for Her Royal Highness, Raleigh is more interested in exploring the New World and the affections of lady-in-waiting Beth Throgmorton. This was Davis's second portrayal of the Tudor monarch: she had played the lead role in The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex 16 years earlier.
