The love life of a Czech surgeon before and after the Soviet invasion of 1968. Tomas has a girlfriend and affairs with many women until he meets Teresa, who falls madly in love with him. They marry and, when the Soviet invasion begins, move to Geneva, where Tomas's relationship with old flame Sabina is rekindled. He follows Teresa back to Prague, but her attempts to compete with his philandering bring her only suffering.
