Terrence Malick's Oscar-nominated WWII epic is set during the American invasion of the island of Guadalcanal against fierce Japanese resistance. His first film after a 20-year hiatus, he uses a cast comprised of now-star names, many of whom were then largely unknowns, to evoke the reality of the carnage, aided by the cinematography of Oscar-winner John Toll.
