Classic depiction of the rise to power of the 18th-century Russian empress Catherine the Great. As a naive young German princess, she is made to renounce her nationality and marry the deranged Grand Duke Peter of Russia, who soon after ascends the throne. But the marriage is not consummated, and both soon have affairs and become locked in a deadly power struggle in which Catherine displays her new-found wisdom, worldliness and strength.
