Jeanne Moreau stars in Ismail Merchant's touching drama as a world famous novelist who returns to Paris after 40 years' exile in America to try and buy the apartment block in which she grew up. The visit reopens painful memories of the writer's Jewish mother, who died during the Second World War, and the men she left behind in the 1950s.
