The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996)

Directed by
Milos Forman

This film is centred around the life of Larry Flynt (Woody Harrelson), founder of Hustler, one of America's most pornographic magazines.

When strip club owner Larry Flynt and his wife set up a pornographic magazine that ignores the then, strong societal morals and taboo's, he is soon arrested for obscenity, contempt of court and libel, his only support being his loyal wife Althea (Courtney Love) and his lawyer Alan Isaacman (Edward Norton), who although abhors the business, will fight for his basic civil liberties, such as freedom of speech, to the bitter end.

Flynt and his truely overburdened lawyer soon find themselves fighting for freedom of speech in courtrooms across the states. However times change and as the pair fight the cases Flynt is left paralysed after an assassination attempt, and a now heavily drug-dependent Althea begins to suffer badly from the symptoms of A.I.D.S.

This film traces the court battles and the changing times, as drugs and AIDS begin to take their toll and the laughter dies.
