Judith Hearn (Maggie Smith) is a middle-aged spinster who suffers from a drink problem while living in Dublin, Ireland.
In order to make ends meet Judith earns a bit of money by giving piano lessons in the Dublin of the 1950's.
However when she is relocated to a shady boarding-house she falls in love with the shady land-lord who, in turn, decides to exploit her as far as he can. This starts her tragic quest for love and happiness.
This is the much awaited screen adaptation of Brian Moore's 1955 novel of the same name.
