Rock Hudson and Kirk Douglas star in this western directed by Robert Aldrich, from a screenplay by Dalton Trumbo. Dana Stribling tracks down Brendan O'Malley, the killer of his brother-in-law, to the Mexican ranch owned by John and Belle Breckenridge. O'Malley, hoping to rekindle the affair he had with Belle when she was 16, persuades Stribling to join Breckenridge and his wife on a cattle drive to Texas, where the score can be settled on United States territory. But Breckenridge is killed by a Confederate veteran who accuses him of wartime cowardice; and Belle rejects O'Malley in favour of Stribling. However, O'Malley falls in love with Belle's daughter Missy and the two plan to run away together at the end of the cattle drive. Which is the point at which Belle reveals a dramatic secret that will lead to a climactic showdown.
