Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges and Cybill Shepherd star in Peter Bogdanovich's Oscar-winning classic drama portraying small-town life in 1950s Texas. The narrative tracks teenage friends Sonny Crawford and Duane Jackson over the course of a year, from November 1951, observing their relationships with various local characters, including Duane's girlfriend Jacy; Sonny's married lover Ruth; and Sam, the owner of Anarene's pool hall, cinema and diner, its sole leisure venues. As well as following the ups and downs of Anarene's citizens' lives, the film offers a snapshot of the USA at the dawn of the Korean War and the point at which TV undermined the dominance of the picture houses. Leachman and Johnson won Best Supporting Actress/Actor Oscars for their roles; Oscar-nominated were Jeff Bridges and Ellen Burstyn for supporting roles; Bogdanovich for director, and again, with Larry McMurtry, for their script; and Robert Surtees for his stark-but-stunning black and white cinematography.
