Skilled but socially inept FBI agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is gunning for promotion, but her boss Hale has one last hoop for her to jump through. Sending Ashburn from New York to Boston, he challenges her to partner up with foul-mouthed cop Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy) and take down a drug kingpin. It's fair to say arrow-straight Ashburn and bull-in-a-drug warehouse Mullins aren't instant BFFs, but as they get closer to their target, can they bring out the best in each other?
McCarthy reteams with the director of her breakthrough film for this fun and, unusually, female-led buddy cop comedy. The first feature of occasional Parks and Recreation writer Katie Dippold, The Heat combines the slapstick silliness and not-too-unpalatable violence of your usual action comedy with some engaging character moments, brought to life by Bullock and McCarthy. While The Heat doesn't stray too far from the expected formula, it's a thoroughly enjoyable Hollywood comedy lit up by its gifted leading ladies.
