In the summer of 1922, self-made millionaire Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio) is living across the water from old-money Long Islanders including Ivy League boor Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton) and his Southern belle wife Daisy (Carey Mulligan).

A secretive tycoon with money to burn, Gatsby regularly throws lavish parties at his waterside mansion with the sole purpose of enticing Daisy (with whom he had a wartime romance) to attend. She never has. But all that changes when her stockbroker cousin Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) moves into the cottage next door. With access to both Gatsby and Daisy, Carraway watches with interest as the two embark on an affair that will have devastating repercussions on everyone around them.
