The second film in The Godfather saga is split into two strands. The first explores the back-story of Vito Corleone, showing his arrival in New York as a young man (played by Robert De Niro) who resorts to strong-arm tactics to protect his fellow migrants. The second brings us up to date with Michael's consolidation of the family and his expansion south, to Havana, and west (to Lake Tahoe, Nevada).
More ambitious than the first film, Part II shows Francis Ford Coppola in full command of his skills as a film-maker, balancing a bigger budget and a wider wingspan. The Academy responded in kind at the next awards ceremony. It was as if it had taken them two years to work out what the rest of America saw in the original film. The movie doubled its tally of Oscars, winning six, including Best Director and Best Picture, again.
