This acclaimed and highly original sci-fi fantasy romantic drama, starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz in multiple roles, requires concentration and can also verge on the pretentious. Released in 2006 and directed by Darren Aronofsky, the tale comprises three stories, spanning 1,000 years.
At the request of his queen (Weisz), 16th-century conquistador Thomas (Jackman) raids a Mayan temple looking for the Tree of Life. Switch to 21st-century America, and Tommy is searching for a cancer cure to save his ailing wife. Move to 26th-century space and Tom is drifting towards a nebula with an ancient tree. The stories are linked by Tommy's love for Isabel, his fear of death and the quest for eternal life.
Following his acclaimed drama Requiem For A Dream, Aronofsky once again proved himself a visionary film-maker with this challenging and beautiful sci-fi fantasy. An unusual film experience, it has not one, but three stand-out performances from both Jackman and Weisz. Love it or hate it, the film is beautifully shot, with highly stylised sets complementing Clint Mansell's strong score.
