Chef Tom Solomon and British psychology research student Violet Barnes meet in San Francisco, fall in love and decide to get married. To celebrate, they throw a lavish engagement party for their friends and family. It's a happy affair, but the consequence of Tom's best man meeting Violet's sister provides the first delay to Tom and Violet tying the knot.
Then Violet accepts an irresistible offer from the University of Michigan, further postponing their nuptials - and undermining Tom's career prospects in the process.
