Chef Tom Solomon and British psychology research student Violet Barnes meet in San Francisco, fall in love and decide to get married. To celebrate, they throw a lavish engagement party for their friends and family. It's a happy affair, but the consequence of Tom's best man meeting Violet's sister provides the first delay to Tom and Violet tying the knot.
Then Violet accepts an irresistible offer from the University of Michigan, further postponing their nuptials - and undermining Tom's career prospects in the process. As their time in the north elongates, it brings success for Violet, a mini-breakdown for Tom and a series of events that conspire to push their wedding date ever further into the future. But then something happens that will resolve matters one way or the other.
