Peter Strickland's drama explores a very particular relationship between two women, played by Sidse Babett Knudsen and Chiara D'Anna. Where Berberian Sound System paid homage to 1970s Italian horror movies, this film gives equally exquisite attention to pastiching that decade's European S&M exploitation flicks. The story revolves around Cynthia, who owns a large country mansion, and her maid Evelyn. The pair share not just a mutual interest in moths and butterflies, but also each other. And for discipline: Cynthia is a stickler for cleanliness, and whenever Evelyn fails to meet her exacting standards, she is punished via the medium of humiliation, bondage or confinement. But, as becomes clear, there's a deeper dynamic at play between these lovers... And thus Strickland uses his protagonists' nuanced interactions to explore power balances within a relationship, and how far someone is prepared to go indulge/satisfy their partner's sexual needs.
