Jesse Eisenberg stars in Richard Ayoade's second feature as a director. The dark, psychological thriller about personal identity and emotional needs is adapted from Fyodor Dostoyevsky's 1846 novella, but set in a grimy version of the present. Timid Simon James is an also-ran in his own life: he leads an uneventfully drab existence, he slaves unnoticed and unrewarded in a mundane job, and his affection for his workmate Hannah passes undetected by her. He probably thinks things couldn't be worse, but he's about to be pushed into a vortex of paranoia and depression by the arrival of a new colleague. Disturbingly, James Simon is both Simon's physical doppelgõnger and his emotional opposite. And it's not long before James's brash, go-getting personality sees him succeeding in every arena where Simon fails. Not least with Hannah... Also featuring Tim Key, Chris O'Dowd, Paddy Considine and Chris Morris. First screening on Film4.
