Satyajit Ray directs Sanjeev Kumar and Saeed Jaffrey as two 19th-century Indian aristocrats with a dangerous passion for chess. They play every day, regardless of events happening around them. As they concentrate on their game, the British are skilfully manoeuvring towards capturing the king in real life, intent on seizing power. But still the two members of the court compete regardless. A masterful piece that paints a picture of a troubled India weighed down by apathy.
