The Blue Umbrella is a charming tale, set in the beautiful northern state of Himachal Pradesh and based on a short story for children by Ruskin Bond, an Indian writer of British descent. The narrative, which explores the nature of envy and friendship, centres around the young Binya who falls in love with a gorgeous blue umbrella owned by a Japanese tourist. She manages to exchange her bear-claw necklace for it and her acquisition enthrals everyone in the village, particularly the old shopkeeper Khatri, who becomes obsessed with owning it.
