Brian De Palma's stylish screen adaptation of James Ellroy's novel based on a true life murder in Los Angeles in 1947 of a would-be actress, found dismembered. The case was never solved.
The grim death of a struggling actress, Elizabeth Short (Mia Kirshner), looking to make a name for herself in 1940s Tinseltown, ultimately overshadows anything she accomplished during her short and tragic career.
When police discover Elizabeth's body cut clean in half and with all of her organs missing, ex-pugilist detectives Lee Blanchard (Aaron Eckhart) and Bucky Bleichert (Josh Hartnett) are the men charged with cracking the case and apprehending the killer. Things get further complicated when Bleichert becomes involved with Blanchard's glamorous wife (Scarlett Johansson, pictured).
