The Barefoot Contessa (1954)

Directed by
Joseph L. Mankiewicz

Ava Gardner and Humphrey Bogart star in writer-director Joseph L Mankiewicz's satirical drama about Hollywood stardom. Maria Vargas came from humble origins and was discovered dancing in a Madrid nightclub by wealthy businessman and aspiring movie producer Kirk Edwards and film director Harry Dawes. However, Maria's rapid rise to fame and success couldn't prevent her from meeting a tragic end. Her story is told in flashback, beginning at her funeral. Dawes recalls discovering her and developing her talent; her publicist Oscar Muldoon remembers how she ignored his advice to stay away from the Latino playboy Alberto Bravano; and Maria's husband Count Vincenzo Torlato-Favrini recounts how happiness turned to tragedy after he revealed his closely-guarded secret to her.
