That's certainly the case here when the Lutz family move to a big house in the New York suburbs which they bought at a bargain price. When they start to be terrorised by supernatural forces, they discover that the house was the scene of a recent mass killing and was also the home of an 18th-century satanist. Terrific.
A remake of the 1979 original, this 2005 horror film - starring Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George (pictured) - just about passes muster, but others within the original Amityville series are felt to be better.
