Rated as one of the all-time classic kung fu movies, this fact-based adventure from the legendary Shaw Brothers studio is directed by Lau Kar-leung and stars Gordon Liu in a classy tale of determination and revenge. Liu Yu-te lives under Manchu oppression in China. Secretly an organiser against the Manchu yoke, Liu's college tutor urges his students to rise against the tyrants. They do so, with disastrous consequences. Escaping the massacre, the badly injured Liu crawls to the Shaolin Temple, where the monks take him in and nurse him back to health. Spying the means of his revenge, Liu asks the monks to train him in their famously effective martial arts skills. He works his way through the 35 spectacularly ingenious and challenging 'chambers' that comprise the monks' teaching, ascending from ineptitude to mastery.
