Shot-order cook Frank D'Arbo (Rainn Wilson) is powerless to stop his beautiful wife Sarah (Liv Tyler) from leaving him for flash drug dealer Jacques (Kevin Bacon). Lamenting her departure, the depressed loser takes to watching a religious TV show about a superhero called the Holy Avenger and experiences a vision that will change the course of his life.

Deciding to become a masked avenger, Frank heads to a local comic book store for inspiration, and seeks advice from nerdy shop clerk Libby (Ellen Page). Armed with a wrench and clad in a bright red superhero costume, he takes to the streets as Crimson Bolt and begins dealing out bloody punishment to everyone from muggers, to people who jump the queue at cinemas. With Libby joining his demented crusade as psychotic sidekick Boltie, Frank sets out to rescue Sarah from Jaques, but quickly discovers comic book heroics don't pan out in the real world.
