Following on from The Wrath of Khan, the ruined Enterprise limps home, the crew grieving for Spock, who gave his life to conquer Khan. Back at base, the ship is due to be broken up and the crew dispersed, until Admiral Kirk learns that Spock's spirit lives on in a member of his crew and that his friend can be restored to life.
