Every time teenager Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb) takes to the waves she transforms from a normal schoolgirl into a brilliant sportsperson who wows the crowds. As a champion surfer, she is building a reputation that spreads across the whole of Hawaii and beyond.
However, one night she is devastatingly attacked by a shark, losing an arm, leaving her dreams of being a world-beating surfer all but over. Bethany doesn't take her misfortune lying down, and through determination and faith in her abilities, she strives to reach her goal, and with the help of her loving mum Cheri (Helen Hunt) dad Tom (Dennis Quaid), she may just make it.
